Terroir

The Požega Valley, which the ancient Romans called Vallis Aurea or the Golden Valley, is an area with a thousand-year tradition of vine growing. Even before them, the fertility and mildness of this region had been recognized by the Illyrians and Celts, the peoples who first cultivated the vineyard slopes of today’s Kutjevo wine region. In the distant geological past, this area was covered by the Pannonian Sea, and its retreat left behind layers of sediment, limestone, and sand. These very layers shaped the present-day slopes of Krndija and Papuk, where the vine today finds ideal growing conditions. On these former seashores, the Krauthaker vineyards now flourish. Viticulture in this area has an almost eight-century-long continuous tradition. The Cistercians, a monastic order, arrived in Croatia in 1208 at the invitation of the Croatian-Hungarian King Andrew II, and in Kutjevo they recognized the exceptional potential of the region’s climate and established the first vineyards, thereby creating the oldest Croatian terroir. Over the centuries, viticulture continued to develop, while history and practice remained focused on preserving quality, respecting nature, and continuously cultivating grapes according to ecological principles that Krauthaker still follows today. The grape varieties were not immediately defined, but over time it became clear that Graševina thrives best in the Kutjevo terroir. Graševina became the most widespread variety and a recognizable symbol of this region.

The geological history and diverse soil composition give this area exceptional viticultural potential. The soil in the Krauthaker vineyards is predominantly sandy and loamy, often with rocky components and rich in minerals. At higher elevations, the soil is loose and airy, which promotes deep root development of the vines, while during summer it retains the heat necessary for optimal grape ripening. In the Krauthaker vineyards, the principles of sustainable cultivation are respected. Planting density ranges from 7,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare, allowing for a better balance between yield and quality. The Krauthaker vineyards are located on the southern slopes of Krndija and Papuk, at altitudes between 200 and 400 meters. The climate of this area is balanced between continental and Pannonian influences, with annual precipitation ranging from 500 to 800 millimeters. Large forest complexes of Krndija and Papuk provide natural protection from cold northern winds and contribute to a favorable microclimate. Such conditions are particularly well suited to Graševina, a variety that expresses its full potential in this terroir. In different micro-locations, soil, altitude, and microclimate shape wines with unique characteristics. Each of these locations has its own recognizable nuances in aroma, freshness, and structure, confirming the richness of the Kutjevo wine region terroir. The combination of natural features, experience, and dedication to the vineyard gives Krauthaker wines a distinctive signature that reflects the strength and history of the soil from which they originate.
